  1. 220$ for a night in a marina? Forget it. In fact, by buying this big 47 foot boat, we’ve priced ourselves out of a lot of marinas because we could stay in a swanky hotel for about the same price and have unlimited showers, a pool, and a sauna. Good thing we love to anchor out. I think I’m beginning to think like a ‘cruiser’ because based on your reflections of that town, I’m pretty sure I would just be walking through and admiring architecture and not much else. Nice pics.

Agreed! For that amount of money I would think housekeeping should come and clean the Puffster and make the beds. We have stayed in expensive marinas (when we had jobs). Some seemed worth the rates because they offered fabulous amenities. We are not finding that here, just high prices and so so facilities. More often than not, we can find a much less expensive alternative with minimal hardship. We mostly anchor outside of the marinas and used the dinghy. We can usually find a free dinghy dock. We are not alone in this. It must chafe the marina owners a little when they see boats within reach not willing to pay the price.

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out on Google+. I took a few tacks through your blog and am now on a glorious broad reach! Really nice job. I enjoy your sense of humor which is lace very nicely with very helpful information. I look forward to following your adventures and maybe having an opportunity to cross paths.

    Fair Winds and Following Seas!

      Hi Doug,

Thank you for the nice comment. Yes. If you are in the neighborhood, we are never opposed to meeting new people over an adult beverage, or two.

Ah yes, a dram or two of vital nectar is a delightful thing! Let us know if you’ll be visiting Buzzards Bay before the snow flies or the flies show! Whatever!

        Fair Winds!

I just read your post about the flies! So true! We took a break now and then by anchoring in the SassafrasRiver, hope you give it a try. There are no jelly fish there because it is FRESH water. We could safely swim to cool off without fear of those little buggers! Didn’t have a problem with flies there. Cute tiny frogs though!
We spent 30 years sailing the West Coast (CA not FL) and boy is East Coast sailing different!
We will be headed to the Caribbean next year. We will still carry our trusty fly shatters everywhere we go!
    Enjoy your summer!

    • Hi Diane,
Thanks for the great information about Sassafras River. We will take a look at it. The jellyfish are interesting to watch from the distance of the deck. I am being extra careful getting in and out of the dingy. 🙂 We have enjoyed seeing a lot of wildlife on this trip.

We have met quite a few West Coast Sailors on the East Coast. They have all said that sailing the Atlantic is very different from the Pacific. We decided to add the West Coast to our list of places to visit by boat.

We will keep an eye out for you in the Caribbean.

      Have a great summer!

Happy Sailing, Erdos’ ! or is that redundant

  5. I’m enjoying reading about your adventures. I didn’t know we had cowboys here and haven’t seen a place selling Crab Pops before. Very interesting. I might try to make the competition next year.

I live near Galesville, MD (Just south of Annapolis) I would love to drop by with a few adult beverages and take a look at Cream Puff. Let me know if that will work out.

Coming east September 3-15. Wife and I would love to visit your boat. Possible? Where do you think you’ll be?

you were so close; did you see the wild ponies swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague on July 29th? I know it’s one of those good/bad things about modern society but for me, the fact that there are still wild horses so close to the US east cost metropolis is kind of special.

    • Mark

      Hi Don,
We did not see the ponies swim but heard about the event. We agree, the ponies are very special. It is nice traditions such as these continue.

  8. Love your latest post – yet another place I want to visit. That Smith Island cake looks so delicious! Seems like the perfect food for breakfast. Think of all the energy you would have for the day’s boat projects if you ate all that sugary goodness. Sadly, we don’t have any cake onboard, so I guess it will be oatmeal as usual 🙁

    Mark and Cindy,

My wife and I are starting our search for an Amel Super Maramu and plan on cruising soon. We would love to host you for dinner if you make it north to the DC/Mt. Vernon area. Congrats on the beginning of an amazing journey! We are hoping to be in your shoes in the next year or two. Fair winds and a following sea.

Just missed you! We left Jacksonville Beach July 2. We had a nice 4th of July in Charleston. We are presently in Bald Head Marina at Cape Fear. Running up to Beaufort today. Here’s my blog in case you need some commiseration for the love and care we put into our boats. timeforusii at blogspot.com I am not up to date yet; but I am working on it every day. Those boat projects gave me very little free time.
