Hi – great meeting you both on ferry to Guana. Love your site and hope my husband and I can follow in your waves some day 🙂
Hi Nancy,
Great to hear from you.
Follow your dreams. We hope to see you on a boat out here one day 🙂

I’ve enjoyed your blog. I am very interested in the Amel 53, but I am concerned about the relatively deep draft. How limited are you with your draft in the Bahamas?
Hi Will,
We do not feel limited at all with the 7’ draft. It is pretty funny when people ask us what we draw and we tell them. They all make a face and say, “ohhh”. We found a great Abaco Guide by Steve Dodge. It has a two-page section about where to cruise the Abaco Islands with a 9’ draft. With this said, we do need to watch the tides when entering some areas. For instance, Hope Town on Elbow Cay is charted 5-6 feet all about the entrance. Because the tidal swing is about 3 feet we can easily go in at high tide, or a couple of hours either side of high tide. Once in, there is plenty of water. We have found when the water is shallow, it is really shallow.
We did not buy an Amel thinking we would only cruise the Bahamas. We have plans to go further. This is by far the best designed boat we could find for safe world cruising. If we were only to cruise the Bahamas, we would have purchased a cat. However, I do not like to sail cats off-shore. Many do, but it’s not for me.
If you are serious about buying an Amel, do not do it without talking to Joel Potter, Google him. Use him as a buyer broker, it cost you nothing since the seller pays the broker fee (like real estate).
Hi, I’m AJ, a personal chef, freelance writer, and boat enthusiast from Idaho. I’d love to write a guest piece for your blog with safety/sanity tips for having pets on board your rig. Let me know what you think, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Sorry AJ, We are not open to guest posts. Thanks for stopping by he blog.
Also would love an update on how you like that dinghy. We still have not decided what we will get. I am tempted to just take the one we have but we do know it’s too small. Would love a Portland Pudgy, but $$$ gives us pause.
I have never met a McVitie’s I didn’t like. If I’m going to eat cookies, I like them thin, crisp, and dunkable. Totally on your side in this one.
Sleek looking dingy. I’m anxiously awaiting the pictures of each of you waterskiing behind it. Also curious of what will be it’s new name? May I suggest Bahamian Rhapsody?
“Bahamian Rhapsody” Cute!
Now I can’t get that darn song out of my head.
Wonderful Junkanoo pictures! Something I’ve always wanted to experience. Glad you guys are having such a good time in the Bahamas 🙂
Hello Mark and Cindy
I stumbled on to your blog today while surfing the web… I was specifically looking for good stuff on Crisfield. I live in town there and am also a board member at the museum. I want to thank you for your review of our little town. Yes, we have a few tarnished store fronts and in revitalization mode… and all good things come in time. I hope you visit us again… and next time hope to meet you. On the weekends during the season we can be found at L-48 Somers Cover Marina!
Kathleen
Hi Kathleen,
We are glad you found our little blog. There is a bit more about Crisfield and Maryland under the blog “Maryland….Friendly People…” And another post from Mark when the Chesapeake Cowboys visited Crisfield.
We enjoyed Crisfield and the nice people who live there. It was hard to tear ourselves away from the Smith Island Cake, but we eventually did.
Give everyone at Somer’s Cove Marina our best.
Happy New Year!
Best wishes,
Cindy
Beautiful pictures! And a great review of your first year afloat. I enjoy reading your blog and look forward to 2016.
Thanks Marie! We had a great time in 2015 and think we’ll keep going a little while longer 🙂
Happy New Year!
